For many years, the two-lot space at 1760/1772 Market Street seemed cursed, operating as Carta and Michael’s (and, for a time, Michael’s Octavia Lounge) before becoming Octavia Lounge, a gay-ish restaurant and piano bar that often held fundraisers and other gay-related events, including the annual Holiday Leather Brunch.

By May of 2008, there were rumors that Octavia Lounge was on the market, and in September of 2008, they announced that they had been sold. A week later they announced that they were closing within days.

In January of 2009, the closed Octavia Lounge space reopened as Triple Crown, with bottomless mimosa brunches by day and operating as a nightclub with a brand new dance license by night. BeBe Sweetbriar, Christian Owen, and Adrian Taylor (a.k.a. DJ Pornstar) had a gay night on Thursdays called Flight 1760, an airlines-themed event not too dissimilar from BeBe’s Launch party formerly held at Jet. Chi Chi LaRue brought her “Pop Goes the Zipper” party for the weekend Folsom Street Fair 2009.

In late 2010, the space was acquired by Duncan Ley and Ben Bleiman (Bullitt, Tonic, Lightning, Mayhem, Soda Popinski’s), who with Paul Miller of the SOMA gay bar Truck were making their first foray into gay nightlife with their new bar, Rebel, which opened in March of 2011. As a complement to Truck’s truck stop vibe, the bar played up an “Evel Knievel, ‘rebel-without-a-cause’” biker theme, with motorcycle helmets and a real motorcycle as props. Drag legend Suppositori Spelling brought her Sunday drag show, Cocktailgate, from Truck to Rebel’s bigger stage while Joshua J started a new Saturday night party called Stallion. Anna Conda’s drag show Charlie Horse, formerly at the Cinch in the Polk, had a brief reincarnation at the bar.

Sneaky’s BBQ, which had been operating out of Rebel’s kitchen, announced in June of 2012 that they were going back to catering and delivery for a few months while transitioning to a new space in the Mission. Rebel announced that they were looking for a new pop-up or chef to manage their food operations. But by October of 2012, the owners decided the location just wasn’t conducive for a neighborhood bar. They retooled it to be a special events space under the name 1772 Market, the address of the bar’s other entrance.
